She began seriously practicing hatha yoga and vipassana meditation at 16 when she began to get a sense of an inherent connection between the mind and the body. In her B.A. studies at the University of California Santa Cruz she majored in medical a medical anthropology and human biology, and went on to study various forms of movement and energetic therapies including massage, cranio-sacral therapy, and Reiki. In 2000, her training as a teacher in yin yoga inspired her to to study the Chinese meridian system in relationship to her hatha yoga practice. She initiated formal training in Oriental Medicine in 2005 and received her Masters degree in Oriental Medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine, where she obtained a thorough education in classical acupuncture, herbal medicine, and qi gong. As a practitioner, Monica strives to understand the uniqueness of the individual's constitution and his or her personal blocks to health. She combines her acupuncture training, herbal and dietary therapy, and hands-on physical and energetic modalities in order to recognize and reduce physical and energetic blocks in the body which inhibit reaching our full potential. Classical Chinese Acupuncture In this system, the human body is seen as a natural landscape, consisting of various representations of the elements changing seasonally as well as daily. The expression of these 5 elements of Classical Chinese medical theory (fire, water, wood, earth, and metal) are observed through the color of the face, the sound of the voice, the scent of the body, and the inherent personal characteristics of an individual. Each person has a very unique constitution that may be balanced and harmonized through utilizing the qualities of the elements through acupuncture treatment. Qi Gong and Yoga Therapy Qi gong and yoga are the priorities for Monica's personal practice and are therefore reflected in her acupuncture practice. She is fortunate to be able to recieve ongoing mentoring from her qi gong instructor in both acupuncture and hands-on qi gong energy work. She uses these methods in her acupuncture practice to move obstructions in the physical and energetic channels of the body. Monica's knowledge of and passion for yoga and qi gong also provide her with resources to recommend qi gong and yoga therapeutic exercises for her clients to practice at home. Classical Chinese Medicine is a holistic medicine and is intended to treat the body systemically by balancing the root disharmony, rather than focusing on various superficial symptoms. However, Monica has received additional training in dealing with specific treatment areas including:
